FAQ
What is Torture?
Athletic apparel in undyed natural fiber, made here. Torture is about embodied existence and the beauty of the struggle: choosing the hard thing and going through it. Four pieces are in development: Heavy Shorts, Thrash Shirt, Speed Tank, Glam Tank. Nothing is for sale yet.
What's up with the name?
Metal was born in Birmingham in the late sixties, in a manufacturing city in economic decline. Black Sabbath did not offer a way out. They said the pain was real, and people who had been told otherwise believed them. That is the whole function of their sound. Not escape. Confrontation. You process the hard thing by going through it, loud, with other people.
Athletics is the same transaction. Nobody makes you show up. You choose the hard thing, you go through it, and you come out the other side with something nobody can hand you. Torture is named for that choice, in the style of the bands that wrote the music we train to.
What does metal have to do with gym clothes?
Metal is catharsis, belonging, and the kind of authenticity you can only earn by going through something. Our textiles are raw, pragmatic, with purpose in every choice.
Why natural fiber?
Because we believe that garments should be things that we love and sit in harmony with the world that we live in. The cloth comes off the loom the color it grew, and we leave it that way. The fibers we use are among the most abrasion-resistant you can put on a body. They take a bar, a rack, a stone, a bag, and a floor without pilling, and they soften with wear instead of breaking down. This country has a 200-year history of milled textiles that is worth celebrating and fighting for. We still know how to do hard and great things.
Why undyed?
Tony Iommi lost his fingertips in a factory on his last day of work, then he tuned his strings down so he could press them, and the sound that came out is the sound of metal. Our fabric celebrates its composition. Nothing sits between the athlete and the fiber on their skin. The plant, the loom, the wearer. That relationship is the product. As raw and close as Tony's stumps on the strings.
Why made in America?
Because the people who make it are part of our community. A community based on the belief that an idea, a set of shared values, is what makes us Americans. Torture is a set of knowable relationships: the farm, the mill, the cut-and-sew shop, the athlete. It puts you in the room with people who also choose to do hard things because those things are hard and worth the hardship.
